I’ve loved Cluedo since I was old enough to understand what a bluff is. But the first time I played any other kind of murder mystery game, I was disappointed. It turned out solving the puzzle relied on super tenuous ‘evidence’ that would never have resulted in a conviction in real life.
How do I know? I have a bachelor of forensic science and my studies included insights into evidence and its use in court.
However, the format of the game was intriguing and I soon set out to determine whether there were more realistic and satisfying games. And I found some. And I wanted to play them all! But given they could only be played once, I found the price exorbitant. (In many cases, the games were significantly more expensive than a book, yet a book can be re-read and enjoyed many times over.) I also came across some truly terrible specimens.
At the same time, my kids (then 6 and 8 years old), were keen to play some mystery games too, but they wanted games that had pieces they could play with. They too loved Cluedo, but they wanted additional games for variety.
So, I decided to do two things. Firstly, I began hunting down the best mystery games belonging to a whole range of game types. That way, I could find more games we could play as a family, and I could share my findings with others looking for awesome problem solving games. And secondly, I decided to start creating my own games, using my forensic training and love of immersive story telling (I’m also an author) in order to develop more affordable non-replayable game options, so more people can experience the joys of mystery games.
